PRINCESS PINES AND A PRINCESS

Sunday afternoon hike with Andy and Iris to the Lost Forty.  This is a special place where what we call the Princess Pines grow.  This is the only place we have ever found them.  Tiny pine tree-like plants that cover the area densely.

Taking a photo break with some attitude!!

A closer look at the Princess Pines.

...and a little less attitude...

Lunch break around a campfire...Phinn (their dog) just loved this hike, too.

Iris and I thought this tree trunk looked like a Gargoyle face, she tried to match it.

Finally a tree we could really get into.

Me, too.

After about two hours we started our hike out of the woods.

Iris was stopped every few feet by something she saw that was utterly beautiful...I often saw it just as she did too, this is a girl after my own heart.  I did say to her, you know, you are just like me, and her reply, "I want to be just like you."  My heart is full.

ANNUAL FRIENDS OF THE KICKAPOO VALLEY RESERVE APPRECIATION DINNER

Once again the Appreciation Dinner

This year because we could not find a venue that would hold 100 people and also have a kitchen, it was decided that I would do an evening of appetizers and desserts.  None of us realized, especially me, that this was going to be way, way more difficult than making a sit down dinner for 100.  This was weeks in the making and research, but I believe, it was a success!!

Here is a not too great photo of the menu:

Helpers serving the four hot appetizers:  Organic beef tacos with toppings; meat sauce baked pasta; meatless sauce baked pasta; and Italian sausage bites.

This is a shot of the cold appetizer table...

and here from another angle.
(Tortilla wheels; several savory cheesecakes; garlic/feta dip and homemade naan; antipasto skewers, to name of few of these dishes.)

and the dessert table

It ended up to be about 75-80 people, with lots of left overs.  (All through the weeks prior to the 28th I would wonder if I had enough food and so, being the Sicilian that I am, I kept preparing more and more.)  Needless to say, there were plenty of leftovers.  We announced to the crowd that they should make plates to take home...and nary a crumb remained.

Despite this being more work than I had ever done for the Dinner, it was, as always a great experience, and I must say the cooking/baking/researching/planning, though daunting, was really fun!!

PASTA SUPPER/DAM CHALLENGE

The annual Friends of the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Pasta Supper rolled around once again Friday, Oct. 6th.  A great event despite multiple small glitches throughout the evening.  We ended up serving about 160 people.  The menu remains the same each year:  Homemade Sicilian pasta sauce, homemade bread, salad and tons of desserts.

Twenty five loaves of bread this year.

Cooking the sauce at home, four large kettles that produced 86 #s of meat sauce.

Which, when cooled filled 13, 5 quart ice cream buckets.

I also made a meatless sauce, which was made entirely from fresh roasted tomatoes.  This produced 3 buckets full.

The next day was the Dam Challenge, and we were challenged with thunder, lightening and lots of rain forcing a decision to cancel the canoe portion of the Triathlon and just hold the 15 mile bike ride and the 3 mile run.

Iris and Elsa had intended to canoe with Andy, but as it turned out,  Iris just biked and Elsa ran with him.

Iris and Andy coming in on the finish....Iris being the only 'kid' in the bike race.  They did not even finish last...she did a terrific job!!

Running in for the 'trade off' where Andy picks up Elsa...

and they set off for their three mile jaunt.

and look at those smiles...

triumphant at the finish line.

And here is the team...I am so proud of all of them, especially the girls doing their first race in such inclement weather.

GREAT, THOUGH BRIEF, VISIT

My sister Barb, husband Mike and their dog Sam, took a road trip from Montclair, NJ all the way to La Farge, WI.   They arrived on Saturday and left on Monday...brief but full stay!!

Neither had ever seen the Mississippi River, so on Sunday we took a drive along the river...stopped at the overlook park in Lansing, Iowa.

Saturday was Mike's birthday, so with Jonel/Andy and girls we had a celebratory dinner.

Although it was a long four years ago that we had last seen one another (in N.J.) it hardly seemed that kind of time could have passed.

We spent much time laughing and talking and eating, and yes, taking lots of photos.

It is at least a 900+ mile trip to come visit us here in Wisconsin, I am so grateful that Barb and Mike made the trip.  We had a wonderful time together sharing old memories and making new ones.

IRIS IS ELEVEN

(An eleven fashioned from my zinnias, made for the real birth day.)

Iris and Andy's mom share the same birthday, September 22, and as the Vernon County Fair was the weekend before their birthdays, Andy's folks came for that.  Iris was showing, for the very first time, her dog, Phinn.  Phinn came to their household from Andy's folks, so they wanted to both celebrate the birthdays as well as see Iris show the dog.

Iris, (Andy) and Phinn waiting their turn in the ring.

Iris gets initial instructions.

Iris wanted pizza for the duel birthday celebration, and as it was my 'task' (one of love by the way) to make the pizzas, I decided it was much easier to have them come to my house rather than tote hot pizzas to them.  So  Iris and family and Andy's folks came to Jug Creek Saturday evening.  No cake that night, but Iris' favorite dessert, Raspberry Slices, kind of like a slab pie.

For the past ten years I have made some kind of a 'theme' cake for her birthday, something of her choice, for example a Conestoga Wagon like those used on the prairie.  This year, much to my dismay, her request was for a simple mint chocolate cake, another of her favorites.

(The cake in the foreground is a flour-less chocolate cake, at Jonel's request.)

Wanting to do something more than 'simple' I turned it into a heart-shaped cake.

I also like to hand make something for birthdays, and this year Iris said to surprise her.  (When I make the birthday girl something, I also make it for the non-birthday girl.)  So I made a circle skirt, as the girls wear skirts quite often.

Here she is 'showing off' her new skirt.

It is hard to believe that this child is now a young lady as it seems only yesterday I held her in my arms with her baby cheek warm on my skin.

I feel a special bond with this child, a young girl who is intelligent, observant, curious, conversant, silly, helpful, talented...to mention only a few of her wonderful traits.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

Sometimes I feel helpless in the face of this world, it's disasters, it's wars, it's human devastation, bias, racism, anti this and anti that.  In the wake of what happened last week in Charlottesville, VA, I was feeling depressed and especially helpless.

Wanting to make a small statement, do something positive and public, and engage Iris and Elsa as well, we set out to make 'positive posters' filled with love and friendship and embracing all people.

Taking a stack of old National Geographics and multiple scissors, we cut and we cut and we cut.

Iris had the idea to find hands of all colors, and samples of all religions for two specific posters among the many she made.

And we set to work discussing love and friendship, tolerance and love, love and hate, unity and division, love and beauty, love and people, human beings and love.

The following are the results of our first venture in making 'positive posters'....

I have distributed these in various public places.  Although I know that those reading these and gaining a good feeling, for the most part are those of like minds, but maybe, just maybe someone who is 'on the fence', more moderate than Alt-right, will be swayed a bit.

Our children can teach us so much!!

We are not born with hatred in our hearts.

We have plans to make many, many more.

JULY 2017

July 5th brought this lovely little calico kitten to our home.  Her name is Calico and we call her Coco.  She is three months old, has six toes on each front paw, is terribly sweet and loving.

This is the way she spends her evenings....

and this is her favorite position in which to sleep on my lap.

The garden is producing well despite the over abundance of rain, did I say over abundance of rain, I meant a deluge (read on for more on the rain).

One of my favorite breads for sandwiches is Miami Onion Rolls which I have always purchased...but then it hit me, I was sure I could make them...

...and so I did...
they are really delicious.

Zucchini is of course aplenty right now.  I saw a photo of this dish in a magazine and wanted to create it myself,

and so I did.

Very thin sliced squash, both yellow and green, (I used a vegetable peeler to slice them).  Sitting on a bed of caramelized, onions, garlic with a touch of white wine, curled up tightly with cheese, and tomatoes stuffed inside.  Not only is it really beautiful, it is really sumptuous as well.

Back to the rain.  We have had more rain this summer then we can recall.  Tuesday evening the sky was threatening but lovely...

...just across the road from our house...

...truly it was a sight to see.

however, that evening and the next day brought upwards of 5-6-7 inches of rain.  The Kickapoo River, not far from us, was way over its banks, the town of La Farge was flooded, waters running in the streets, streets closed, etc.

My daily bike route takes me on Old 131, on the Kickapoo Valley Reserve.  This is Bridge 13, the first bridge I cross on my almost 20 mile ride...The bridge sides 'railings' are probably 8-10-12 feet from the floor of the bridge, and as you can see, the water is up to the top of the railings...simply unbelievable!!

This is the last bridge I cross on Old 131 (I then turn around and take the same route home) and the river is up to the floor of this bridge.

As I write this, the waters have receded some, but not enough.  The damage from the flooding is substantial, the waters have carried logs, trees, etc., to places they should not be.  All of the damage has not yet been tallied, and that will take some time.  Many roads are still closed, the river is inaccessible and dangerous.   I probably won't be riding my route for quite some time.

In addition to all this, on Sunday the 9th Freddie and I set off to do an off-road bike ride on the Reserve.  We hadn't gotten too far from home, maybe 3 miles when turning onto a gravel road to take us to the woods, something happened, which I do not recall.  I wiped out pretty badly and found myself entangled in my bike unable to remove my foot, bruises everywhere, minor bleeding, and dents in my helmet.  (I presume I was knocked out briefly as I don't remember the crash.)  Yelling for Freddie he came to my rescue and freed my foot.  At my insistence he went on while I rode home and googled broken ribs...as my left side was hurting something awful.  Nothing to do for broken ribs and so I did Ibuprofen for several days.  When I stopped taking the Ibuprofen my left ankle started hurting, hurting worse each day, and had not gotten any better even until this morning, despite icing, wrapping and elevating.  (I must admit I still went biking.)  So off to the clinic this morning. as ankle was really painful.  It turns out I have a small break on a bone high up on the ankle.  I will be wearing a 'brace' for four weeks...good news, doctor says I can still bike!!  She also palpitated the ribs and thinks they are just bruised and not broken.  Lungs look good, and she says I'm doing everything right.

What a month!!

ELSA'S GOLDEN BIRTHDAY

It hardly seems possible that this sweet, loving child is going to be eight years old tomorrow...the 8th, her Golden Birthday.

Originally she asked for 'Strawberry Slices' (a pie made on a cookie sheet, flat) her favorite by far of all things sweet to eat.
(So I made one today for her real birthday tomorrow.)

Then she changed her mind and decided that she wanted a Star Wars party...

...and a Chewbacca cake...

Chewbacca definitely presented a challenge for me, but it was such fun to make, and she was so delighted with it.

Presents, cake and ice cream at the park after a couple of hours roller skating.   (No, I did not roller skate)

'Grreerl' is Happy Birthday in Chewbacca-speak, otherwise known as Wookiee.

Here she has blown out the candles and is about to distribute the 'eyes', a couple of friends wanted them, the nose...licorice, to another and the mouth and teeth to yet others.

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate...believe me this was a chocolate cake.

I love this child who is a determined, bright, inquisitive, independent loving girl.  She makes my years happy and filled with a special glow.
